Good morning, Great Britain! Winter has officially arrived, and I find myself envying the common dormouse, who is no doubt already enjoying it’s seasonal slumber. But duty calls, so until the human species realises the genius of hibernation, the mydeco team will do our best to distract you from the bitter cold with our selection of today’s best best design stories.
mydeco’s pick of the top three news stories:
1. Design Week: Starbucks launches boutique stores in UK
Starbucks, the McDonald’s of the coffee industry: you can love it or loathe it, but you can’t avoid it. As the largest coffee-house company in the world, the chain is often cited as a prime example of American cultural and economic imperialism. This is precisely the image that the new ’boutique’ campaign hopes to contravene, with each Starbucks interior tailored to reflect its location. The first U.K. bespoke branch, inspired by loft-living opened on Conduit Street in London on Friday. Now they just need to remodel the other 15,755 and we’ll be all set…
2. The Times: Georgian houses: Britain’s most wanted
So apparently giant Georgian houses such as the one above are amongst the most covetable in Britain. Big surprise. What might shock you is the premium you will pay to capture that Pride and Prejudice feel – on average 43%. According to experts, buyers are attracted to the high ceilings and practical use of space characteristic of Georgian buildings. Guess Mr. Darcy had no need for Ikea storage solutions in his house…
3. Design Milk: Eskayel Bespoke Wallpaper
Wallpaper shows no signs of slowing down as an interior design trend, and neither does the stream of artists jumping at the merchandising opportunity it provides. The latest is Eskayel, a St Martins graduate who uses digitally manipulated sections of her paintings to produce these kaleidoscopic designs. Personally I think they’re fantastic: aesthetically pleasing without the pretension that comes as standard in Hirst’s wallpaper.

There you have it, our best effort to cure you of Monday morning blues. Tune in again tomorrow to see what Tuesday brings…
Damien Hirst/Schmamien Hirst! The Affordable Art Fair is One Not to Miss 23 October, 2009

I can only speak for myself here, but last year I would have done unspeakables to get my hands on Damien Hirst’s For the Love of God – aka: ‘that gawdy diamond-encrusted skull-thing’. While I’ve yet to create a 3D Room around it, I can assure you this lil’ beauty would have perched ostentatiously atop my hand-chiseled marble fireplace, guarded by none other than my purebred Persian vigilantes. Needless to say, I would have been forever ahead of the current skull trend, and I’m pretty sure MTV’s Cribs would have cruised on over for high tea and a game of polo. Shame about the whole thing, really, as I was only about £50 million short!
In reality, to even let Hirst’s name escape from one’s lips is enough to turn many completely off from the thought of owning any original piece of contemporary art. With the art market being so jaw-droppingly expensive, how can the other 99% of the population juusst outside the periphery of art’s elite afford to decorate our homes with inspiring works from some of Britain’s best up-and-coming?
If you’ve been sitting at home wrestling with this quandary (staring at your blank-and-blah walls no doubt), be sure to check out the Affordable Art Fair, now on through Sunday night in Battersea. Unlike Frieze’s boggling £25 admission last week, tickets to the AAF will set you back the cost of a trip to the Tate (£12). With pieces from 120 carefully curated galleries exhibiting works between only £50-£3000, I can definitely speak for everyone else here at mydeco when I say that you’ll be able to find some cool, modern, or retro piece to ‘really tie the room together’.

And, if you’re keen on checking out the newbies, be sure to peruse the Recent Graduate Exhibition (hint: new trends in the art world often inspire future interior design trends, so take notes!). There are also opportunities to get your hands dirty with some fun and educational artist-led workshops. Who knows – maybe you’ll be the one to create that masterpiece perfect for your home!

As London Design Festival creeps closer we’ve had an even beadier eye on the press for the very latest interior and design news. Here are today’s tasty tidbits. Grab a cuppa and enjoy!
The Guardian: The V&A opens revamped ceramics collection

Not long after I moved to the big smoke, I headed to the V&A to browse their huge collection of ceramics. The ceramics were lovely. The dark and dingy rooms where they languished were not. Now, they’re getting a new lease of life. On Friday, the V&A will open its revamped and reorganised collection in beautiful, sun-filled rooms on the 6th floor. Expect delights such as a 600-year-old Chinese red-glazed wine cup from the Ming period, cups and saucers made around 1220 and buried for 800 years, and a wealth of British pottery, including a commemoration of the 1833 abolition of slavery. Not to be missed. And if that’s not enough, check out our top ten pottery picks – Ellie’s tribute to her favourite film star potter, Patrick Swayze.

‘Summer’s here and the time is right, for dancing in the streets’, warbled Martha and the Vandellas. Well summer’s over, but there can still be dancing. And since it’s too cold for dancing in the streets, why not try dancing in your seats with this musical pouffe? Music Chocolate is an upholstered, chocolate-coloured ottoman with an integrated sound system for your MP3 player. But that’s not all. You can also lounge while you listen in the matching musical chaise longue. With their retro Seventies feel and modern technical twist, we can’t wait to see the pieces in a week’s time when they exhibit at Tent London.

Design Week: Nightclub of the rich and royal gets a revamp
Crystal Club, a favourite haunt of Princes William and Harry, is set to unveil plush new interiors by Beirut-based Gatserelia Design. The new look is all satin-polished and brushed metals, and features colour-changing walls detailed with Middle Eastern calligraphy. Sounds lovely, but with a discerning (to put it mildly) door policy and security more thorough than a US airport, it’s unlikely we’ll get to ogle the revamp first hand (unless anyone knows Kate Middleton or Lily Allen?). Oh well – the club’s famous £2m lighting installation is on the scrap-heap now (a casualty of the revamp) so I’m not sure it’s quite up to my standards anyway! If anyone can get me in though…
Ella Doran’s London Design Festival plans 4 September, 2009

A couple of days ago I caught up with surface designer extraordinaire Ella Doran, to find out what she’s up to during the London Design Festival.
Quite a lot it turns out. And what’s more, it’s all for a good cause.

As part of their House of Cards campaign (which aims to raise awareness about the UK housing crisis) Shelter have organised a super-cool exhibition of work by artists, designers and architects – and Ella is one of the big names.
‘[Homelessness] is such a poignant cause, and so now’, Ella told me. ‘And it’s all the more humbling because it is happening during London Design Festival, the week when we celebrate design, houses and the interior. I think it should act as a rain check [for the industry]. It’s great that we are able to produce beautiful designs, but it shouldn’t be at the cost of others.’ Well said.
And this isn’t any ordinary exhibition, either. Oh no. The folks at Shelter have done something a little different. To fit with their theme, they’ve invited contributors to create works of art based on different cards from the pack. Ella’s 3 of Diamonds pillow (above) is based on the ‘concept of having shelter and somewhere to rest your head’.
Other famous creatives getting involved include Damien Hirst, Alexander McQueen, Rankin, Vivienne Westwood, David Bailey, Sophie Conran and Sir Terence Conran and Henry Holland.
Quite an impressive line-up, wouldn’t you say? And guess who has the inside track on whose creating what?
A little birdie told me yesterday that Henry Holland has designed the Four of Diamonds as a dress, Sophie Conran has represented the Four of Spades using hand pressed paper with pressed leaves, and Sir Terence Conran has created the Ten of Spades as a self-portrait.
The full deck will be on display from the 24-28 September at the Haunch of Venison Gallery. Get down there and check it out.

But that’s not all that Ella is getting up to with Shelter. She has also invited numerous designers, artists and illustrators to design placemats for her aptly named ‘There’s no place like home‘ exhibition and auction. The exhibition will be held at her shop in Chesire street from 19 September – 3 October and launches with a tea party!
When I spoke to Ella, she was getting rather exctied about the imminent event: ‘It’s definitely going to have the wow factor. We’ve got so many artists contributing designs we’ve gutted our small shop to fit them all in! We want the way we exhibit the work to be as impressive as the pieces themselves’. She also revealed that her favourite designs from the collection are by Martin Parr and Peter McDonald (above).
Ella’s own photographic placemats are just as beautiful. My favourite are the Sunlight Through Leaves set – firmly on my wish list.
A silent auction will be held throughout the exhibition to sell the placemats, and all proceeds will go to Shelter. Why not head down and place a bid? Purchases that contribute to charity are fully justifiable in my eyes!
Three cheers for Shelter, Ella and art with heart.

We’ve been scouring the web to bring you lots of lovely design news and property gossip to accompany your extended Friday lunch. Enjoy!
The Guardian: Banksy caricature of royal family is removed by council

Now I’m not one to condone graffiti, but when it’s an original Banksy that someone’s taking the hose to, I might just take a soaking in the name of art. Lucky (for my new coat) then, that I wasn’t present when council officials in Hackney painted over a Banksy graffiti sketch that had been left untouched for eight years. The sketch is a cartoon of the royal family waving from a balcony and was used by the band Blur as the cover artwork for their 2003 single Crazy Beat. Local residents were not impressed and neither am I.
Design Week: New Mallett furniture designed by former photojournalist Willy Rizzo
I am in love with this new range of furniture for Mallett. With its simple structure and metallic finish, it’s a perfect example of the architecture fashion trend that’s hitting homes this season.

KBB: New design -washing your hands in the toilet

Teeny tiny downstairs loo? We’ve got the answer: a new toilet that incorporates a sink into the lid of the toilet tank. Even better, it’s totally eco. When you flush, fresh cold water runs through the faucet for hand washing, which then drains back into the tank to be used for the next flush. Genius.
Moco Loco: Kisawings lamp for Yamagiwa
How cool are these structural, transforming Kisawings lamps? Statement pendant lights are a great way to add drama to a room. Hang a row of Tom Dixon Beat Stout pendant shades over your dining table for instant envy from your dinner guests.

The Independent: Damien Hirst in feud with teenage artist over pencils
Lesson of the day: Don’t nick pencils. Especially if they’re part of a Hirst sculpture. A teenage rival to the millionaire artist stole pencils from Hirst’s Pharmacy scultpure as part of an ongoing feud. He is now banned from visiting the Tate Britain and is waiting to find out if he will be formally charged with causing damage to an iconic artwork. Oops.
Dornob: Home furniture collection from recycled airplane parts
Not a look that can be easily recreated (unless you’ve got some spare airplane parts lying around), but I love the industrial look of this totally unique furniture collection.

The Metro: Chicken-legged house is clucking ridiculous
And just in case you’re lacking that funny, Friday feeling – here’s something to make you chuckle. Russian carpenter Vasily Kozin has created a replica of the wooden hut that Russia’s legendary witch character Baba Yaga lived in.
The chicken-legged house stands on a plinth outside the village of Ulyanovka, but you’ll be pleased to learn that no poor soul lives in it – not even the crazy carpenter himself.
Happy Friday!
Elton John opens art gallery 1 July, 2009

I feel like we haven’t heard any flamboyant and eccentric news about Sir Elton John in quite a while. Thankfully, my celeb-gossipy thirst has been quenched during the past week following his famous White Tie and Tiara Ball at his home in Berkshire last Thursday, which was also the official opening of his latest project – an art gallery.

Credit: Shutterstock
The theme of the ball was Contemporary Art, no doubt due to the new gallery which he and partner David Furnish have adorned with fabulously expensive and bizarre art from the most famous of artists. Damien Hirst’s iconic ‘Inescapable Truth’ features a white dove mid-flight which is viewed from inside a clean white box. The Chapman Brothers, Grayson Perry, Gillian Wearing, Andreas Gursky, Louise Bourgeois and Philip Taafe are among the other artists who also have the honour of having their work displayed by Elton. They were on the £30,000-a-table guest list and prior to the ball David told the London Evening Standard: “Damien is coming, Tracey and the Chapmans and Gary Hume. They’re all friends of ours as well.” Of course they are!
Snowblind by Damien Hirst (£1,100) is made of money – very appropriate – and is available from Eyestorm. The artist is also renowned for his controversial artwork, such as his series of Elusive Truth artwork. Get Hirst’s Elusive Truth Two Pills (£88) from Amazon, although I suspect a lot more than two pills were swallowed at the White Tie and Tiara bash…

Damien Hirst artwork
Other famous names at the Ball included Lily Allen, David Walliams, Lily Cole and a lot of other annoying people that the gay couple are bezzies with. For desert, Justin Timberlake performed and the event’s auction raised £4 million for the Elton John Aids Foundation- if they auctioned off J-to-the-T I’m sure the ladies would have tripled that amount! Or maybe the Elton-Davids would have!
