Light is the first element of design. Get lighting right and create warmth, mood, depth and interest. Get lighting wrong, and your room becomes an uninviting and uncomfortable place to be. There are so many beautiful designs out there, so make lighting the focus of your room, as well as complimenting your interior. These community users have created some gorgeous 3D rooms that feature striking lighting; here are some amazing ideas to steal.
The 3D room above is called London Suburb and it is designed by member Sanja. That Icone Caboche Grande, £1,365 is a real conversation starter and gives a tougher touch to the soft and comfortable looking living area.
1. This room, Chic Living by Joshwaa makes the most of the cool, modern monochrome style with a large black contemporary ceiling light and curving floor lamp, £350 from Heal’s. The bold structures compliment the simple luxury of the room without being too over the top.

2. Hideaway which was created by klwoodard proves you don’t have to stick to subtle colours for your lighting. The fun, bright yellow of these lamps gives the room a focal point, as well as lifts the scattered sunny accessories from around the room.

3. This pretty room, Tiffany, designed by community member limina88 is so unique. It combines delicate vintage looking Tiffany lampshades with a brash, eccentric chandelier, £95 from Notonthehighstreet.com to create a look which is romantic yet bold and eye-catching.

4. Member 3rdfloor created Telegraph 4.2 to enter into one of the community competitions. He has used a complete mixture of lighting, from a tiny modern white wall light, £65 from The Conran Shop, to brilliant spangly chandeliers. The room has an icy look that is completed by the glistening lighting and it’s reflections in the large mirror.

5. Garden Lounge by ladyinlavender is already a funky and bright room, so the lighting that is used has been well planned so as not to complicate the look. It is understated, slick and minimal. White pendant lighting, £220 from All Up and On.

6. Small Apartment has been designed by Ya_Lu and is a shining example of how lighting can really make a statement. The natural, organic look will be big this Autumn, so these frost-bitten twiggy lights are bang on trend.

7. Frankham designed Rouge 11 with iconic lighting in mind. The room is striking enough as it is, but the real show-stopper is the slick design of the Tom Dixon copper lights, £230 at Nest. They make the room look fit for a 70s disco but are still smart enough to give the room a modern edge. And how do you compete with these dazzling lamps if you need more lighting? Frankham has used a £199 floor lamp from Nest, which blends in nicely to the walls, so as not to steal our attention away from the ceiling lights.

8. Creative community member Doudou has really gone all out with focal lighting with this beautifully designed 3D room, Doctor’s Kitchen. The Santa Sole Cubrik suspension lights, £788.50 from Nest and Bokka at Lee Harmer red table lamp, £617.55 make a true style statement and show it pays to invest in designer lighting in your home.

9. Calm Cream by AnjieBaby is certainly an inviting and relaxing looking living space. But to save the room from looking too beige, (yes sometimes you can be too beige!) the Arco floor lamp, £1,400 from The Conran Shop offers a contemporary City twist.

10. If in doubt, add more lighting. This theory works well for Hafize, who has showered the 3D design Concetta withe space age ceiling lights galore. The look could have got messy, but with the right amount of spacing and colour, it just works, proving it’s all about the lighting.

Having blogged over the last few weeks about the launch of the 5th Cardiff Design Festival taking place in the Welsh capital this October, I thought it only right and fair that I follow suit this week with the low down on one such event that drew the crowds in this weekend…
…Saturday and Sunday saw the turn of Wonder Culture’s ‘Designer’s Market’ on this month’s ‘Design Trail’ (think Mini Milan) – a vibrant, farmer’s market style shopping showcase (but for interiors and gifts obviously!) with various Welsh brands selling everything from vintage clothing to Welsh themed crockery – staged in the newly refurbished and oh so fashionable, Chapter Art Centre in the heart of Cardiff city centre.

Apart from the fact that Wales at Home had their very first ’stand’ at the event, we had plenty of time for some serious retail therapy of the most relaxing kind…ambling from stall to stall with a cup of coffee in hand, browsing and chatting to our favourite Welsh designers.
And my hot picks?
1. Welsh themed crockery courtesy of Keith Brymer Jones from Bodlon – if you ever need a stylish and personal gift to say ‘thanks’ to a generous host (I love the Brecon Gin hamper), or simply want to say ‘thinking of you’ to a special friend (who wouldn’t be touched by a pack of heart shaped Welsh cakes and stylish mug?) – then this is always my first port of call (see website for prices);

2. Hand-printed tea towels from Peris & Corr add a quirky touch to any kitchen, £9;

3. Limited edition cushions from Nomad & Nest, £45, and handy leather shoppers;
4. Vintage style, fabric covered from By Kirsty (a visit to her city centre studio where she is known for holding rather popular ‘micro beer festivals’ also adds to her appeal’;

5. Tactile alternatives to the ever growing trend for wall decals in the form of felted butterflies and flowers from Rachel Horrocks;
6. Mode provided plenty of ideas for essential Christmas presents with their Big Hand coat hook, £22, and Fridge Monkey,£4, (yes, I know it’s early but who could resist?);

7. And a ‘oh so pretty’ illustrated tea cup tea towel for £5 from Eak Design naturally found it’s way home with me!

This will come as great news for those of you who love designing 3D rooms and being experimental with it too. Sam, our technical guy, just tweeted on twitter that we can now upload any images into our 3D rooms.
This means you can use whatever image you like as wallpaper for the rooms, and even use your holiday photos to set the scene that you can see through your windows! The possibilities are literally endless..
For more information on ‘how to’ go to our facebook fan page (and don’t forget to become a fan!) where you can also see a link to a room we made a few hours ago, using some lovely cloud photos to decorate the walls of an otherwise boring room!
The instructions are under the ‘boxes’ tab in the latest discussion.
Cannot wait to see what you come up with!

Good morning!
Over the past couple of weeks we have been set on improving your experience in the community section of mydeco, by answering your questions and listening to your suggestions.
A few community members said they would prefer it if other members didn’t copy their 3D room designs or moodboards and present them as their own, with no mention of the original creator. This is especially frustrating for people when the copier enters the copy into a competition, and starts gaining votes for something that they did not do.
So now, when a 3D room is copied, the original creator’s name is automatically added to the copy, so everyone knows who really created it.
This means that new people can still be inspired and easily get started, as they are still able to copy established designers rooms, but without annoying that designer.
It also impossible now to enter a copied room into a competition.
Also, competitions are much fairer as more entries are displayed on the page, so your entries may get more votes.
Hooray! xx
