Think pink for breast cancer campaign 29 October, 2009

Given the choice, most of us in the mydeco office would rather dress in pink on Friday in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign’s ‘wear it pink’ day than come in to work in Halloween fancy dress. Lots of mydeco retailers are supporting the cause by donating a percentage of profits from specific pink products to breast cancer charities this year – and I’ve chosen my favourite ten!

This pretty pink Kitchen Aid mixer is top of my wishlist, and buying one will donate £50 to a breast cancer charity! Finally, a great excuse for retail therapy.

You can help us raise money for Breast Cancer Campaign by creating a pink moodboard. For every moodboard created, we’re donating £1. So far we’re at over £300 – help us make it £500! Enter now.

This pink moodboard was created by mydeco member LisaR.

Ah, everything from Sweden tends to be so very stylish doesn’t it, along with Denmark – there must be something about that wonderful clear light, long summer days and clean air that gives them the edge in the design stakes. If you haven’t already seen it, we thought we’d share a new favourite blog – Chez Larsson. Visual merchandiser Benita, who writes the blog, shares some great stylish tips, crafty tricks and inspiring photos – and what we like best is that they’re all taken from her own house – so she’s a great source of practical ideas to improve your home.

The new post that caught my eye was this one about wallpapering inside a cabinet to use up scraps of left-over paper. What a genius idea!  Here’s the inside of the cabinet with wallpaper tacked onto the shelves.

And here’s how it looks with the doors open – matching the walls beautifully!

The ikeahacker blog is one we keep checking here at mydeco – the ingenuity and creativity that enables some people to turn flat-pack furniture into design works of art constantly amazes us!  I saw this post and just had to share it here. Regular ikeahacker Randall turned a 59″ TV cabinet into a stunning bathroom cabinet, housing a sink and pipes!

Turning his attention to Grono lamps, he’s also created these beatiful floor lamps from the smaller Grono lights. What a brilliant idea! Check out ikeahacker for more creative ways to customise your Ikea buys.

What’s on in June: Art Car Boot Fair this Sunday at Old Truman Brewery 11 June, 2009

If you live in London, it’s well worth checking out the Art Car Boot Fair this Sunday, June 14th at the Old Truman Brewery, 146 Brick Lane. Now in it’s 5th year, the Art Car Boot Fair was started by a goup of Brit artists including Gavin Turk to give the capital’s artists a day to let their hair down, and Londoners a chance to pick up  big name limited edition art for car boot sale prices.

This year participating artists include Sir Peter Blake, Gavin Turk, and Gary Hume – serious big hitters in the Brit art world whose limited edition works normally fetch thousands of pounds (if not hundreds of thousands). If you’re into art or want to start collecting, this is a great way to pick up a limited edition piece by a big name for just £10 – £50. If you’re lucky, you could even get it signed by the artist, as I did last year with my Peter Blake ‘Pretty Taxing’ road tax disk (see below).

If you can’t make it to the fair, you can still buy Pretty Taxing tax disks online by a range of artists from £30 each from their online shop. There’s also food from local eateries such as St John’s Bread and Wine and The Bath Pig, as well as entertainment from The Bethnal Green Working Men’s Cub: The Correspondents, The Sundae Kups, The Restaurant Mystery, Les Apaches, Ronnie King, Trixie Malicious, Marawa the Amazing, and Bendy Burlesque duo, plus Hot Breath Karaoke, Bum Bum Train, Hunga Munga, THE SEVERED LIMB and the Kissing Booth. Like I said, it’s a car boot fair with a difference! The Art Car Boot Fair is open from 12 – 6pm Sunday, June 14th.

Be productive during the tube strike: Create your own designer lampshade 10 June, 2009

Illuminati lampshade pattern

Illuminati lampshade pattern

I love this idea from Illuminati designers Arash and Kelly - download their free pattern to create your own beautiful lampshade. You can make any of the three designs included (my personal favourite has to be the Octopus light) using just an A1 sheet of paper/cardboard in a colour or pattern of your choice, a pencil, ruler, scissors and stapler!

What are you waiting for? There’s nobody in your office today thanks to the tube strike, so if you’re at work grab your stationery supplies and have a creative moment making some gorgeous lampshades to brighten the place up. And if you’re “working from home”, make one on the sofa while watching daytime TV – ahem, I mean working on that spreadsheet. Download the pattern here.

We want to see what you make – add some photos of your lampshade creations to the mydeco Flickr group or post them to your profile on mydeco.com.

card-0012

This card provided tons of unintentional amusement for me today. I bought it for a friend’s birthday…

Seems like there may have been some misunderstanding about what the greeting inside the card should be. Hope she doesn’t take it as a reflection of how I feel about her! I’m going to send it anyway.
