While most people usually celebrate reaching the ripe old ages of 18, 21, 50 and anything beyond that, here at mydeco we are pretty chuffed to have reached the two-year landmark.

‘Bake us a cake’ and you could win a cakestand from Laura Ashley worth £30!

The room chosen for a 3D makeover this week was sent in by Alan, of Thundersley, Essex. Alan is looking for a redesign that will update his oak bedroom, complete with some innovative storage solutions to hide all his clutter.

‘I’d like the space to feel modern – maybe even minimalist,’ says Alan.

We were interested to see what ou users would come up with this week: with so many home furnishings and accessories to choose from on the 3D tool, sticking to a minimalist decor can be tough! Thankfully everyone rose to the challenge, and Alan had plenty of great designs to choose from. The winning room was created by mydeco community member FRANKHAM:

‘I like this design because the layout seems practical, and allows for storage,’ says Alan. ‘ There are some funky touches, and the mirrors, though a little ‘70s, are sensible given the small size of the room.’

Nothing wrong with a bit of 70s Alan – its making a huge comeback this season! We were also delighted to see one of mydeco’s Design Boutique products used in Frankham’s room: the Bryonie Porter faces cupboard is so unique, and as each piece is made to order you could brag to your friends about owning a piece of ‘bespoke furniture’!

Kelly Hoppen says: ‘This room follows the client’s brief and is certainly minimalist, but it feels a bit cold.  I like the clean, white scheme, but the stripes clash with the patterned cupboard, and a full wall of mirrored storage, though giving the illusion of added space, is overwhelming.  The design all in all seems rather bland. It’s definitely not to my taste.’

Alan’s choice of runner-up was this submission from community member sanja. Whilst he loved the originality of the design, there wasn’t quite enough storage space to put this room in the number one spot.

The room chosen for a 3D makeover this week was sent in by a family from North Yorkshire. Nick, his wife and twin boys are looking for a design that will lighten up the spacious living room of their converted barn, though retaining that ‘farmhouse feel’.

‘Ideally, we’d like a larger window and a wood burner or fireplace to act as a focal point for family get togethers,’ says Nick. ‘As a professional brewer, I’d also love a bar area to add to the space.’

With such a great space to work with the quality of the designs entered this week were phenomenal, but unfortunately there can only be one winner, and Nick’s choice was this design from mydeco community member kaddy:

Nick says: ‘I liked the light, airy designs combining simplicity with contemporary country looks.  The sitting area around the fire looks very cosy for winter nights whilst the bar is well positioned to relax with a drink before sitting down at the table to eat. However I am surprised that no-one lightened the roofing between the A-frame supports – this would have helped to brighten up the overall room a little more.’

We see your point Nick – lightening up those beams would have made a big difference! Still we’re loving the use of those little woven pouffes from Dooley’s furniture – a great seating solution for those with kids!

Kelly Hoppen didn’t share our enthusiasm: ‘This room design is quite daring and unfortunately not at all to my taste. The designer has tried to introduce a textural quality, but ultimately it attempts to do too much.  The choice of yellow all over is too bright for a relaxed country feel – a few bright accessories  have lent more sophisticated impact. The curtains date the rest of the modern scheme, while too many accessories make the space feel cluttered.’

Nick’s choice of runner-p was this ‘country cottage’ submission from a community member who won room rescue 9 back in December. Well done designerv, glad to see you’re keeping up the good work!

We gushed over Abigail Ahern’s book A Girl’s Guide to Decorating, and we’ve even deemed her the coolest chick in interior design.  So boy, we were excited when she agreed to guest judge this week’s Room Rescue competition.

And do our room designers have their work cut out for them this week!  With this cluttered room, it’s going to take some true talent to impress both colour-savvy Abigail, and (colour-shy?) clients, Robert and his wife – who are looking for a more muted scheme.  But we’re confident our winner will be able to strike the right balance and land their design in the Daily Telegraph on 6th February.

The room chosen for a 3D makeover this week was sent in by Lyn Coutts, who is hoping to inject colour and personality into her new-build living room.

‘The house is modern and fresh, but we would love to create a cosy, livable lounge – rather than a bland open space.’ says Lynn.

There were plenty of great contenders to choose from, but in the end Lynn opted for this contemporary black and fuchsia design by mydeco community member chezzamc.

‘I really liked Chezzamc’s design as she had stayed pretty close to our original lay out.  Given we’ve just built & moved into the house we weren’t really looking to put lots of other furniture in, but we needed something to help transform it into a proper living space. My husband also liked the colouring on this design, so we have started jazzing the place up with wonderful purple and fuchsia colours – it already looks so much better!’

We were impressed with this room too – especially the geometric print wallpaper, which is very on trend for Spring. Unfortunately Kelly Hoppen wasn’t so keen: ‘I do not like the design of this room at all. The colour scheme of fuchsia and black is too clumsy and will date very quickly. A palette of neutral shades and luscious textures using art or a star piece of furniture to add colour would have made the room feel more  luxurious  and contemporary.’

Hello and welcome to Room Rescue 10!  Each week, we choose a different person’s room to have our community make over with our great 3D tools.  Design expert and mydeco Design Board member Kelly Hoppen helps choose the winning room, and lends her advice.

The room chosen for a 3D makeover this week was sent in by Peter from Rugeley in Staffordshire.  ‘The room hasn’t changed much since the house was built in 1939!’

Now, Peter feels it’s time to make a change:  ‘I want to create a relaxing space for sleeping and relaxing, which uses the East facing morning light.’

With this in mind, owner Peter and design guru Kelly Hoppen both chose a design by community member imnium as the winner:

Peter says:  ‘I liked the woodland references and calming colour scheme. The mirrored wall would provide a clever means of concealing some of the currently ugly features of the room. It also helps to create light and the impression of space. It’s a practical layout.’

Kelly comments:  ‘I like the idea of this room, bringing the outdoors indoor. Proportion wise it works and the space does not feel cluttered.  All in all a good effort.’

And we love the design too:  the mossy greens create a space of serenity, while the clean lines keep the room from appearing cluttered.  Great work, imnium!

The room chosen for a 3D makeover this week was sent in by Yvonne from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Last year Yvonne’s husband tragically died of cancer: ‘He was the designer of the two of us. The cellar was his boys den with surround sound telly and pictures of cars everywhere,’ she said.

Now Yvonne feels it’s time to make a change: ‘The memories are nice but It’s starting to feel like a shrine and he wouldn’t want that.  I’m ready to make my mark, make it a bit more feminine and discover what my style is.  I want to keep the AV aspect of the room and also need to work there sometimes on PC sometimes.”

With this in mind, Yvonne chose a design by community member designerv as her winner:

Yvonne said: ‘What attracted me most to this design was the colour scheme of green with pink accents which give it a feminine feel without losing the contemporary style. Losing the clutter, wall mounting the TV, a corner space for PC and a contemporary styled sofa are all aspects of this that I will keep. The only thing lacking is some storage space and  would replace the planters with bookshelves‘.

We are big fans of desigerv’s choices too – the colours are perfect for brightening up a dark cellar. Unfortunately this was not the case for design aficionado Kelly Hoppen, who chose this room by gingerpantz as her winner:

Kelly said: ‘As the space is a small area it is important not to make it too fussy. The wood floor works well in the room and I really like the light fitting. I think that a fuller range of neutrals would have worked better as at the moment it looks a bit bland. I understand the look that the designer is trying to achieve here but it is not quite there. A good starting point though.’

Well we can see your point Kelly – the flooring compliments the muted colours perfectly, and we can’t express enough love for that Ivy bookcase from Go Modern! Yvonne like this room too, but was deterred by a critical flaw: ‘This design is lovely but they’ve changed the windows so it wouldn’t actually look like that in my house!’.
