Welcome to this week’s room rescue!

The room pictured below was sent in by Lisa Turner, who wants to redecorate the lounge in her Warwickshire home. Her ideal design is a “Swedish style with a dash of Designers Guild.  I’d like to be very modern, with wall lights and no television please!  The brick fireplace takes up three-quarters of the left wall so the problem is arranging seating around this focal point.”

After viewing the many designs offered by our mydeco community members, Lisa selected the one below, created using the mydeco 3D tool by community member Turquoiseshell

Lisa said: “This design has a very modern Scandinavian theme, and looks bright, making good use of the space. The global lighting over the fireplace is very different and something I would definitely like to use. The sleigh benches look a little uncomfortable  though.”

Quite right Lisa, we love the originality of this design, although perhaps it’s a little more Eastern than Scandinavian in style? The sleigh benches could be comfortable given the right cushions, and let’s not forget there’s plenty of room to snuggle up on that fantastic sofa! Good choice, Turquoiseshell.

Unfortunately, mydeco design board member Kelly Hoppen was not quite as enthusiastic:

“I really do not like this design. Why would you use turquoise when you are working with the brick work?! I would have added a dark wood floor and darkened the beams to match. If the fireplace is to be made a feature of then a roaring fire would be a must. Palette wise a rich cream, terracotta and complimentary natural tones would look beautiful. The furniture looks wrong in the room. It looks like the designer has tried to recreate a Majorcan villa in an English country house! No, no, no.”

Well Kelly might be the expert, but I’m sure most of you will agree that style is a matter of personal taste, and Turquoiseshell has been very considerate of Lisa’s specifications when creating this room.

Coming in a very close second was the design offered by 3rd floor (pictured below).

Lisa said: “The reason I chose 3rd floor as second was the use of 3 table lights around the sofas as it really draws your eye around the room, and i like the bench in front of the fire-place which I will definitely copy.”

Well it sounds like Lisa has found plenty of inspiration to redecorate her living room, and we wish her the best of luck!

Turquoiseshell’s winning design will be featured in the Telegraph tomorrow.

Room Rescue Week 6: Moira picked Lisa R as her top re-designer! 13 November, 2009

Room rescue week 6 Lisa R's designThis is the beautiful winning 3D room redesign, created by community member Lisa R and picked by the owner of the original room, Moira. The room will be featured in The Telegraph on Saturday 14th November so Lisa will get the attention she deserves for her design talent!

We love the fresh Autumnal hues and bold retro prints which really bring the room to life. The wooden furnishings and giraffe art also give the room a modern, tribal look. Room rescue week 6 John Lewis Cushion

Kelly Hoppen says of this design; ‘The saving grace of this design is the sofa. The green chairs are very unusual and I quite like them. I would rip out the fireplace and I really don’t like the carpet.’ Well, it’s not up to her is it? It’s Moira’s choice.  And anyway, the carpet isn’t carpet – it’s rugs!

room rescue week 6 Loveseat

Moira says of why she chose this design;

‘I must confess it has been difficult making a choice as there is not one single design I would really really choose. There are features in several I like but not always the combinations shown.

So the two I quite like are the ….Giraffes ….because it is fresh, colourful and would be quite cosy with the fire on! It makes good use of the space without being clutterd.Think I would choose a different colour of sofa  – not my favourite green. Plus having been to Africa several times I am very fond of giraffes!

But my daughter likes Funkiliscious (by user rt01268), which I like too especially for its colour scheme. But sadly it doesn’t seem to be quite finished especially with the TV behind the vase?’

494050.jpeg_556x435_q85Whilst the decision is up to Moira, she probably doesn’t know how tricky the 3D planner can be in balancing objects on top of one another.. Do you agree with Moira? Please leave a comment below!

Here is the room ‘before’:

Room rescue Week 6 Moira's loungeMoira said of the original room:

“We have been in our house for 5 years and feel as though the lounge needs a revamp! Trying to persuade my husband is another matter – he is too busy with other jobs and not keen to tackle redecorating right now. We live in a beautiful spot in the north of Scotland not far from Inverness. One consideration re design is that we have two teenagers!”

Hi, I’m Kelly Hoppen and welcome to week five of room rescue!

This week’s room has been sent in by Tracey Mayell, who wants to redecorate the sitting room of her cliff-top house in New Zealand to make it relate better to its surroundings.

I like this room, the seating area works well although I do not like the canopy over the sofa, it’s far too fussy and would look much better without it. The dining area is great although the detailed lamp detracts away from the beautiful chairs. The mirrored wall is not working, it reminds me of some kind of dance studio! An extra large mirror could still be used but perhaps framed and leaning against the wall. The main light also needs to be hung much lower.

Week 5’s winner of the Room Rescue competition which we are running with The Telegraph newspaper has been chosen by the room owner, and it’s Sudasal! Sudasal’s design will be featured in The Telegraph tomorrow, 07.11.09 in the Property section.

Tracey, from New Zealand, wanted to give her already beautiful apartment a bit of a revamp:

She says although she loved all of the designs, she picked Sudasal’s modern design, Room rescue template2/1.She says she picked this 3D room because it was, ‘More conservative and realistic for living on a day to day basis. The smart grey colour sheme does not clash with the ever-changing view either. It is practical as well as sophisticated and the canopy daybed looks like a cunning way to escape the Kiwi sun – because even inside I have to wear sunglasses sometimes!’

Kelly Hoppen says of this 3D room redesign: ‘I like this room, the seating area works well although I do not like the canopy over the sofa, it’s far too fussy and would look much better without it. The dining area is great although the detailed lamp detracts away from the beautiful chairs. The mirrored wall is not working, it reminds me of some kind of dance studio! An extra large mirror could still be used but perhaps framed and leaning against the wall. The main light also needs to be hung much lower.’

Do you agree with Kelly and like Sudasal’s room makeover? Let us know below!

Interestingly, Tracey wanted to pick a second choice (as she loved all of the designs!) and she also really loved the look of Cool hangout by AngieBaby!

Tracey said of this striking design, ‘This room has got balls. Big ones! It is sexy, cool and breezy and reminds me of the shed from the old children’s TV series The Double Deckers. There is lots of casual seating which is vital for the drinks parties we hold during the summer. The neutral colours do not clash with the view which is the main focus of the house, and changes its colour and light every day.  But with a cost of 76 grand for the overhaul, we would have to start charging an entry fee!’

Tracey also says, she would, ‘love to know what Kelly would do to a beach house. I’ve seen her fabulous ski chalet, but never a beach house by her. Thanks for the fun I had with this!’ Kelly Hoppen should try and have a go with the 3D room planner too, we think..

Thanks to everyone who took part in Week 5 of Room Rescue. If you think you can do better, have a go at redesigning a room from a photo in Week 8, which is now running. But hurry, you only have one week to enter!

Good luck!

Hi, I’m Kelly Hoppen, welcome to week 4 of Room Rescue!

This week’s room is Jo Greenwood’s sitting room in Chiswick. She moved in recently and is eager to start decorating: “We want to stamp some personality onto the blank canvas.”.

My goodness where do I start! The idea of using Moroccan influence does not give you a license to use every colour in the palette, colours should be considered carefully. The fireplace has to go, it’s just wrong for Moroccan theme, it’s the wrong period and it’s too tall. I would have removed it leaving a recess in the wall which could then have been accessorised. The seating needs to be much rounder and naturally textured and the lighting should be within the bay window and hung much lower.

Hi I’m Kelly Hoppen and welcome to week three of the Room Rescue Campaign!

Each week Telegraph readers put forward a room in their house for a 3D makeover by mydeco.com users. I then take the opportunity to assess their favourite design.

This week’s Room Rescue is Emma North’s spare bedroom in Fulham. She has not looked at it since moving in several months ago. “I want friends to fight over staying with me,” she says.

This is a very different and inviting design. I especially love the use of the tall shutters, they make the room.

3D masterclass: 10 gorgeous lighting looks 21 October, 2009

Light is the first element of design. Get lighting right and create warmth, mood, depth and interest. Get lighting wrong, and your room becomes an uninviting and uncomfortable place to be. There are so many beautiful designs out there, so make lighting the focus of your room, as well as complimenting your interior. These community users have created some gorgeous 3D rooms that feature striking lighting; here are some amazing ideas to steal.

The 3D room above is called London Suburb and it is designed by member Sanja. That Icone Caboche Grande, £1,365 is a real conversation starter and gives a tougher touch to the soft and comfortable looking living area.

1. This room, Chic Living by Joshwaa makes the most of the cool, modern monochrome style with a large black contemporary ceiling light and curving floor lamp, £350 from Heal’s. The bold structures compliment the simple luxury of the room without being too over the top.

light1

2. Hideaway which was created by klwoodard proves you don’t have to stick to subtle colours for your lighting. The fun, bright yellow of these lamps gives the room a focal point, as well as lifts the scattered sunny accessories from around the room.

light2

3. This pretty room, Tiffany, designed by community member limina88 is so unique. It combines delicate vintage looking Tiffany lampshades with a brash, eccentric chandelier, £95 from Notonthehighstreet.com to create a look which is romantic yet bold and eye-catching.

light3

4. Member 3rdfloor created Telegraph 4.2 to enter into one of the community competitions. He has used a complete mixture of lighting, from a tiny modern white wall light, £65 from The Conran Shop, to brilliant spangly chandeliers. The room has an icy look that is completed by the glistening lighting and it’s reflections in the large mirror.

light4

5.  Garden Lounge by ladyinlavender is already a funky and bright room, so the lighting that is used has been well planned so as not to complicate the look. It is understated, slick and minimal. White pendant lighting, £220 from All Up and On.

light5

6. Small Apartment has been designed by Ya_Lu and is a shining example of how lighting can really make a statement. The natural, organic look will be big this Autumn, so these frost-bitten twiggy lights are bang on trend.

light6

7. Frankham designed Rouge 11 with iconic lighting in mind. The room is striking enough as it is, but the real show-stopper is the slick design of the Tom Dixon copper lights, £230 at Nest. They make the room look fit for a 70s disco but are still smart enough to give the room a modern edge. And how do you compete with these dazzling lamps if you need more lighting? Frankham has used a £199 floor lamp from Nest, which blends in nicely to the walls, so as not to steal our attention away from the ceiling lights.

light7

8. Creative community member Doudou has really gone all out with focal lighting with this beautifully designed 3D room,  Doctor’s Kitchen. The Santa Sole Cubrik suspension lights, £788.50 from Nest and Bokka at Lee Harmer red table lamp, £617.55 make a true style statement and show it pays to invest in designer lighting in your home.

light8

9. Calm Cream by AnjieBaby is certainly an inviting and relaxing looking living space. But to save the room from looking too beige, (yes sometimes you can be too beige!) the Arco floor lamp, £1,400 from The Conran Shop offers a contemporary City twist.

light9

10. If in doubt, add more lighting. This theory works well for Hafize, who has showered the 3D design Concetta withe space age ceiling lights galore. The look could have got messy, but with the right amount of spacing and colour, it just works, proving it’s all about the lighting.

Hi, I’m Kelly Hoppen and welcome back to week 2 of Room Rescue.

This week’s room is Michelle Saxby’s sitting room in west London (below). She wants to smarten it up and add more sitting space.

The use of space is better and the low side table is on trend, but the use of colour isn’t right. It’s too flat and the colour highlights look garish.

Be sure to check out The Telegraph on Saturday for the next edition of Room Rescue, and keep your eyes peeled, because I will be back blogging next week.

Hi, I’m Kelly Hoppen, a celebrity interior designer and I’m really delighted to be working with mydeco and The Telegraph for the Room Rescue Campaign.
mydeco is a great portal for design lovers. I love the different angles that help you collect ideas for your own home, be it inspired by experts in their field, celebrities or design enthusiasts using the 3D–Tools.
Things kicked off last Saturday when I passed on my advice to the two winners of the mydeco competition.

See what I had to say about this redesign by community member Ellen Walsh…

ellenwalsh-design-3d-room

There are too many legs in this room, the end of the sofa should be balanced out with something more solid, but the bare bones of the interior decoration work well. The neutral colour of the walls and the brick detail give a Manhattan loft feel, and I love the lamp.

Be sure to check out The Telegraph on Saturday for the next edition of Room Rescue, and keep your eyes peeled, because I will be back blogging next week.
